About the Newsletter

Welcome! A little bit about this newsletter. I’ve started blogging about twenty year ago, blogging on politics and religion. For five years, I did my religious blogging over at Oscar the Pastor.  Then in 2008, I was diagnosed with Aspergers Syndrome, a form of autism and started blogging about autism as well.  After a while, it seemed that Oscar had outlived its usefulness, so I decided to start a new blog that incorporated talking about faith, talking about being gay and African American and about being on the spectrum. So for a number of years, I blogged at A Clockwork Pastor.

Now it’s time to move to a new blog/newsletter. So I give you Infinite Diversity With Infinite Charity.

If you’re a sci-fi fan than you know that this title is a play on the phrase from Star Trek: Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations. I’ve always loved Star Trek for its committment to diversity, but I know that diversity is a goal more than a state of being. As fallible human beings, we are not always as diverse as we claim. Because diversity is hard. It’s human nature to want to stick to our own kind instead of branching out to meet people who may not only look different from you, but think differently as well. In order to work at being diverse, we need love. For me as a Christian, this means the love of God. If we are going to live in this diverse, crazy quilt world, we need a lot of love for each other and for ourselves.

I’ll talk about diversity and love while focusing on my passions: religion and politics. These two topics are the places that can show how we fail to appreciate diversity and also what can help us cross boundaries to really love one another.

A few things about me: I grew up in Flint, Michigan.  From 2008 until 2013 I was the Associate Pastor at First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Minneapolis.  I’ve been the pastor at First Christian Church in Roseville, MN since 2013. I live in Minneapolis with my wonderful partner, Daniel and our cats.
